The 2026 reference point
Malaysia’s Department of Statistics (DOSM) estimates the country’s population at 34.4 million in 2026. Its July 2026 release puts the citizen population at 31.0 million. These are population estimates, not a new census.
Start with the right question
“People in Malaysia” and “Malaysian citizens” have different denominators. For ethnic composition, OpenDOSM distinguishes Malay, other Bumiputera, Chinese, Indian, other citizen, and non-citizen residents. Bumiputera should not be treated as a synonym for Malay.
